The Next Generation Symposium on Japan Studies

The Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur (JFKL), in collaboration with the Malaysian Association of Japanese Studies (MAJAS) and the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Malaya (UM), is proud to present “The Next Generation Symposium on Japan Studies.” This inspiring event, held at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, UM, aims to foster a deeper understanding of Japan among Malaysian youth through a series of thought-provoking sessions, student presentations, and expert discussions.

This year’s symposium is held in conjunction with the Japanese Studies Essay Contest and Mentorship Programme, which encourages Malaysian students to explore critical issues related to Japan and Japanese Studies. Selected mentees from various universities worked closely with established mentors to develop essays on topics ranging from Japan’s healthcare system to the country’s contributions to global sustainability goals. The event offers a platform for these mentees to present their award-winning insights and share their journey of growth with an audience of peers and professionals. Details are as follows:

Japanese Studies Essay Contest: Online Winners Announcement

Since last August, our 4 Mentor-Mentee pairs have been hard at work! Under the guidance of their mentors, the mentees have been writing essays in their chosen fields. After submitting their essays, we’re excited to announce that the Winners Announcement is coming up next week! 

Join us for the online announcement, where the judging committee will reveal the winning essays, on 3 November 2024 (Sunday) at 9:30 AM via Microsoft Teams. To participate, simply scan the QR code on the poster or register via our Google form here: https://bit.ly/jsec_winners. Come onboard and cheer for our finalists! All are welcome!

The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur (JFKL) encourages our youth to share their knowledge and fresh opinions on important topics related to Japan and Japanese studies. THE JAPANESE STUDIES ESSAY CONTEST AND MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME, in collaboration with The Malaysian Association of Japanese Studies (MAJAS) and the Department of East Asian Studies, Universiti Malaya is a one-of-a-kind project that seeks out intriguing submission of Abstracts (400 words-in English) from Undergraduate students studying at any University or other tertiary education institution in Malaysia.

Five selected students will move to the next stage where they will undergo an exclusive mentorship from Japanese studies experts in Malaysia for two months to complete their essay and be on the running to receive cash prizes, a special invitation to present their winning essay at the upcoming Japanese Studies Conference at Universiti Malaya in front of Malaysia’s prominent academicians and researchers, receive certificate of  achievements and more!

Take up this challenge to make a mark in your university life that will aid you in your future prospects such as internship placement or job application!
