Director’s bio

Born in 1949 in Numazu, Japan, Harada made his directorial debut in 1979 with “Goodbye Flickmania”. His works include films with high entertainment value such as “The Heartbreak Yakuza” (1987) and “Gunhead” (1988) as well as titles that are socially-conscious like “Kamikaze Taxi” (1995), the award-winning “Bounce KoGals” (1997), intense political drama “Jubaku Spellbound” (1999), “The Choice of Hercules” (2002), and the critically-lauded box office success “Climber’s High” (2008). His ability to speak and write in English enabled him to work as an English interpreter; and his friendship with Edward Zwick brought him a role as the sly Omura in “The Last Samurai” (2003). In 2012, he received the Special Grand Prize of the Jury at the 35th Montreal World Film Festival for “Chronicles of My Mother”.

His first jidaigeki (samurai period drama) “Kakekomi” released in 2015 has been received favourably by international critics and was a blockbuster hit.
