The 9th Asian Cartoon Exhibition: “How’s It in Asia?”

Cartoon fever! The 9th Asian Cartoon Exhibition has been toured to Ipoh and Kota Kinabalu, now it is coming to Kuala Lumpur.

The yearly Asian Cartoon Exhibition has been organized by The Japan Foundation since 1995 for introducing the societies, cultures, and modes of life of the peoples of Asia from various perspectives, by way of cartoons accessible and understandable to all.

“How’s IT in Asia?” is this year’s theme. With steady globalization underway in a range of fields, various Asian countries are pursuing development of “information technology” (IT) throughout social, business, educational, and industrial activities, and general daily lives of the public, for realizing flourishing societies.

In this exhibition, 8 leading cartoonists from 8 Asian countries such as Malaysia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, The Philippines and Thailand, have put their keen wit into 80 new cartoon works depicting the IT situations in their respective nations, for your bemusement and enjoyment.

Hope those cartoon works by these wonderful cartoonists “of IT as they see it”, packed into 80 humorous and satirical works, nourishes growing interest of viewers and helps deepen understanding about the ways of the peoples, societies, cultures, and life in Asia.

With the support of the Embassy of Japan, this exhibition is jointly organized by The Japan Foundation, The National Library of Malaysia, The Consulate-General of Japan at Kota Kinabalu, Wisma Budaya Art Gallery and Perak State Library Corporation.

Cartoonists

China – Zhang Yao Ning
Born in 1951. He graduated from the Department of Art, Beijing Institute of Education. He works as cartoonist at English-language daily newspaper, China Daily from 1980. Winner of various domestic cartoon awards as well as a judging committee member for Chinese cartoons. Currently, he is a Director of Art Department and Senior Editor of China Daily. He is also a member of the Cartoon Art Commission of the Chinese Association of Fine Artists and Secretary General of the Chinese News Cartoon Research Institute.

India – Posa Surendranath Reddy
Born in 1961. After working as cartoonist at Telugu-language dailies Andhra Bhoomi and Andhra Prabha of Hyderabad, he is now with the English-language daily, The Hindu as cartoonist and illustrator.

Indonesia – Wahyu Kokkang
Born in 1971. He graduated from University of Dr. Soetomo. After illustrating and cartooning at the Indonesian-language daily, Radar Surabaya, he works as illustrator and cartoonist of the Indonesian-language daily, Jawa Pos. He is a member of Kelompok Kartunis Kaliwungu (KOKKANG) and also a member of Paguyuban Kartunis Indonesia (PAKARTI).

Japan – Makino Keiichi
Born in 1937. Since 1976, he contributes a serial of editorial cartoons to Yomiuri Shimbun for 15 years. He was a winner of many awards including Japan Cartoonists Association’s Award of Excellence (1973) and International Exhibition of Sports Humor Art in Ancona, Italy, Biennale Exhibition, Minister of State Award (1984). He is currently Professor of School of Cartoon and Comic Art of Kyoto Seika University, Faculty of Art. He is also a Director of Institute for Manga Studies of Kyoto Seika University, Organization for Human Contact, Secretary General of Executive Bureau, Japan Society for Studies in Cartoon and Comics, and Director of Japan Cartoonists Association.

Korea – Shin Myong-hwan
Born in 1968. He graduated from Graduate School of Architecture, Konkuk University. He was the winner of the Cartoon Grand Prix of the 1st Uunpyong Cartoon Contest (1996), and meritorious work recognition at the 21st Yomiuri International Catoon Contest (2000). He has contributed to exhibitions both in Korea and abroad, such as Kyoto World Cartoon Exhibition (2001), Korea-Japan Co-sponsored Soccer World Cup Cartoon Exhibition (2002), and many others. His works include a collection, Why DOGO Went East (2003) and solo exhibition, Beyond the Frame: Other Sides to the World We Meet Each Day (2003). Presently, he is serializing the popular cartoon DOGO in media.daum.net and also a Chairperson of Cartoon Punch.

Malaysia – See Yew Lee
Born in 1965. At present, He is a Director of Art of United Publishing House, and Editorial Cartoonist of the Chinese-language daily, Sin Chew Daily. Among his published works is a children’s comic Ge Mei Lia. His hobbies are painting, swimming, reading, and traveling.

The Philippines – Bayani “Barry” Jose
Born in 1950. He graduated from the University of the East, Manila. He was a Graphic Designer, then a Cartoonist for a news magazine and various publications and later as a Senior Graphic Designer and Art Director working in Singapore (1991-1997). He has contributed works to group exhibitions of Philippines’ distinguished painters both in the Philippines and abroad. He also won First Prize in the On-the-spot Family Planning Cartoon Contest (1987). Presently, he is Art Consultant for the Department of Agrarian Reform.

Thailand – Palangkorn Suradej
Born in 1950. He is a Cartoonist since 1970, he has produced serials of illustrations and cartoons for cartoon and other kinds of magazines. Currently, he is serializing satirical cartoons of noted people in sports in the Thai-language weekly, Loke Wan Nee and Thai-language sports daily, Super Games. He is an instructor of cartoon drawing for the Thai Cartoonist Association.
