Exhibition Venue: The Annexe Gallery, 2nd Floor, Central Market Annexe, Jalan Hang Kasturi, 50470 Kuala Lumpur

Valentine Willie Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur and Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur is delighted to present new and old works by Chang Yoong Chia in his most awaited solo exhibition since Rimbun Dahan, “THE 2ND SEVEN YEARS: Quilt of the Dead, Flora & Fauna IV, Narratives” at The Annexe Gallery, on Thursday, 19 November 2009 at 8 p.m. This exhibition will be displaying 40 of his signature paintings on canvases, seashells, eggshells, spoons and plates including Quilt of the Dead, a work-in-progress since 2003.

In the 1 seven years of his career from graduation in 1996 until 2003, Chang Yoong Chia has been active in the art scene but it was not until 2003 that his work matured and acquired its distinctive voice. This solo exhibition represents the 2nd part of his career, the continuing 7 years from 2003 to 2009.

The three body of works featured in this exhibition, Quilt of the Dead, Flora & Fauna IV, Narratives, reflects the artist’s preoccupation with the process of art-making and his concerns about the role and meaning of art. Started in 2003, Quilt of the Dead was a public participatory work-in-progress that uses the theme of death as a means for the living to communicate with each other. In contrast, the Flora & Fauna series in 2004 are pieces of works with intensely private expressions of his memories, imagination and love for nature. While Narratives, 2006, explores his concerns about culture and history.

The 2 Seven Years is the accumulation of the artist’s perspective and experience from his artist residencies in Korea, Taiwan and Japan, whilst displaying his belief in art and what it can achieve. With the exception of a few pieces, all the works on display has never been exhibited in Malaysia.

There will be an artist talk scheduled on Saturday, 28 November 2009. The artist talk is open to everyone, there is no admission fee.
