This exhibition, organised by the Japan Foundation, aims to introduce the beauty of Japanese toy culture to audiences around the world. It is the first full-scale international traveling exhibition focused on contemporary Japanese toys organised in Japan, made possible through the cooperation of leading domestic toy manufacturers and the cultural expertise of researchers from the Japan International Doll and Toy Research Association.
In addition to the toy displays themselves, the exhibition features explanatory panels designed to deepen visitor understanding, with the toys organized according to uniquely Japanese cultural themes such as advanced technology, elaborate miniatures, narrative/storytelling, characters, adorableness, and novelty. By seeing these globally popular toys, as well as their accompanying videos and cultural explanations, we hope visitors will be able to learn how Japanese toys, rooted in the country’s distinctive historical and cultural background, are not just tools for play, but an embodiment of deep creativity and spiritual richness.
It is our hope that this exhibition will foster a greater understanding of and appreciation for the charms of Japanese toys, and by extension, Japanese culture itself, and that it will serve as an opportunity to introduce the word omocha (toys) to the world. We hope you have a rewarding and enjoyable visit.
*This exhibition will travel to Kuala Lumpur next. Stay tuned!
