SYNOPSES

Pigeon
directed by YUKISADA Isao 行定 勲

Once invaded by the Japanese army long ago, Penang is now a popular retirement destination for ageing citizens of the country. One such person is Michisaburo Tanaka, a senile geriatric left by his son to spend his remaining years in an old house, surrounded by maids. His sole activity is rearing his flock of pigeons on the roof, hardly communicating with another human being?until the arrival of his new care worker, Yasmin. While initial problems arise, he soon warms to her and opens up about his recollections of the Pacific War.

Starring
TSUGAWA Masahiko as Michisaburo Tanaka
Sharifah Amani as Yasmin
NAGASE Masatoshi as Masao Tanaka

Shiniuma Dead Horse
directed by Brillante Ma Mendoza

After a profitable day at the racetrack, Marcial happily goes home only to find immigration workers waiting at the Hokkaido ranch where he has worked for three decades. Arrested for illegally staying in the country, he is deported back to a Philippines that seems so new and unfamiliar that he is soon haunted by the memory of Japanese wintertime wilderness. Fresh off the success of Ma? Rosa, Brillante Ma Mendoza spins a heart-breaking tale about the loss of one?s national identity and home after spending many years abroad.

Starring
Lou Veloso as Marcial

Beyond The Bridge
directed by Sotho Kulikar

In 1994, the reconstruction of a bridge in Phnom Penh is complete after two years. Fukuda, the president of a Japanese company that oversaw the project, stands by the fruit of his labour where he reflects about the time he spent in Cambodia two decades ago. Then, he had fallen in love with a local dancer named Mealea whom he promised to marry and bring to Japan. However, the rise of the Khmer Rouge regime and impending civil war tore them apart, and now Fukuda is left wondering if she is still alive.

Starring
KATO Masaya as Fukuda
Chumvan Sodhachivy as Mealea
