The year 2023 is an important year to commemorate three significant events. Firstly, it is the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Japan Studies Program (JSP) in 1993 at the Universiti Malaya. Secondly, the year 2023 is also significant in conjunction with commemorating the silver jubilee of the Malaysian Association of Japanese Studies (MAJAS) which was established in 1998. Thirdly and equally important especially in the context of regional cooperation, is the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan relations which began in 1973. Due to the longevity of any organization or collaboration at the regional level, various challenges, achievements and progress need to be discussed.

Accordingly, to commemorate these three historic events, MAJAS which is the main platform representing Japan studies experts in Malaysia has taken the initiative to organize an international conference in a 3-in-1 format. This conference will bring together educators, researchers, alumni and policy makers within and outside of Malaysia to share their insights on wider Japan. Over the years, MAJAS has not only extended its relations with Japanese Studies Association in ASEAN (JSA-ASEAN), it also has collaborations with other like-minded Japan studies associations in Australia, Europe and America. The conference will serve as a platform for bringing together Japan experts in sharing synergies and solutions in empowering Japan studies domestically as well as globally. To this end, Japan Studies in Malaysia serves as a springboard to start the conversation here in ASEAN. Therefore, the main theme of the conference is “JAPAN: POWER, PROGRESS AND POTENTIAL”.
