Japanese Kites and Tops Exhibition

Start Date: 17/6/2003 - End Date: 25/6/2003 ::: Organized By JFKL

Kites were first invented about 2000 years ago in China. They appeared in Japan during the Heian period, when they were known as ‘paper hawks’, the same name they were known in China.

Today there are probably more types of kites in Japan than in anywhere else. They are flown at present mostly during festivals, since it is said to be an auspicious omen if one’s kite flies high. One example takes place during the Boys Festival.

Tops were introduced into Japan from China and Korea about 1,200 years ago. Like many imports it was first enjoyed by aristocrats, spreading to common people later. At present there are about 1000 kinds of tops in Japan. They range from simple 0.5 mm (the smallest) to 90 cm (the largest).

In our effort to keep the tradition alive as co-organizer with Sunway Pyramid, The Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur will hold an exhibition on Kites and Tops at Sunway Pyramid from 17- 25 June 2003.

About 80 pieces of colourful and delicately made kites and 75 sets of Tops of various sizes and types will be displayed.
