Erino Yumiki x Nadir Special Concert

Start Date: 10/3/2023 - End Date: 11/3/2023 ::: Organized By JFKL

The year 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, and ASEAN-Japan relations have made remarkable progress since 1973. To celebrate this occasion, the Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur presents this special collaborative effort where we will invite Japanese guitarist/singer/songwriter Erino Yumiki to Malaysia to perform a live concert in collaboration with Nadir, a Malaysian band composed of musicians from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities.

Better known to support with her guitar to many known artists in Japan such as KIRINJI, Motohiro Hata, Asako Toki and Kou Shibasaki, YUMIKI’s funky groove and guitar technique won the hearts of these artists and upcoming ones she is collaborating with. Seeing her having fun on stage will also captivate you to do the same. Now continuing to establish her sense of style and identity, this talented singer-songwriter, eventually found herself in Malaysia to pursue her music education and taking a break from her career.

Complementing her fun and bright style, Nadir, a progressive-ethno-fusion band that tastefully blends sounds that represent their different worldly experiences, culture, and the spirit of collaboration into what is uniquely Malaysian music with limitless sonic & cultural boundaries. With Carnatic vocals duel with rock riffs, sitar melodies permeate through explosive percussion and table cadences, and tin whistles sing with saxophone melodies, the outcome is not what you would expect.

Complementing and highlighting both Erino Yumiki’s fun and bright style, together with Nadir’s colourful rhythms, the audience can be sure to join and groove along.

Artist Profiles

ERINO Yumiki

Erino Yumiki, a guitarist/singer-songwriter, was born on August 8, 1990, in Osaka. She started playing the violin at the age of 2 and a half, and that was the beginning of the start of her musical journey. Influenced and inspired by The Beatles, she started picking up and playing the guitar. In 2009, she made her major debut as a singer-songwriter. And then in 2013, she joined the band, KIRINJI and plays the guitar, violin and sings. At the same time, she also plays live, writes songs, records and produces arrangements for other various artists.

In 2019, which is also the 10th anniversary of her debut, she released the album “Everyone wants to be a toy” under her solo project as Yumiki Toy for a limited time. In 2021, she performed the opening theme, “Chikip Dance” and narration for the anime, “Chikip Dancers”, which was broadcast on NHK Educational TV from October 2021 to March 2022. In the same year, she announced that she will be studying abroad at a music college based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Even after her return to Japan, with her guitar at hand, she continues to push herself forward, exploring many different things and posting her videos on YouTube.

Nadir embodies the idea of celebrating our differences and revering our roots, embracing the colourful ups and downs of our past while bravely exploring the unwritten future to create a meaningful now, worthy of a lasting legacy. By fusing sounds that represent our different worldly experiences, culture, and the spirit of collaboration, the band moulds what is uniquely, Malaysian Music with limitless sonic & cultural boundaries. Where Carnatic vocals duel with rock riffs, where sitar melodies permeate through explosive percussion and tabla cadences, where tin whistles sing with saxophone melodies, the music is most definitely not what many would expect.

In 2017, Nadir went on tour in Cambodia and performed to 10000+ people at The Cambodian Water Festival in Phnom Penh and collaborated with Cambodian superstar Laura Mam, with a song due for release internationally in 2023.

They’ve also collaborated with French artistic duo ‘IliaEb’ on an experimental visual art/dance/music showcase and are in the planning phase of bringing the show to Paris, France in 2024. Nadir have also headlined the Borneo International Jazz Fest 2018, aside from touring China alongside Kugiran Masdo, and featuring at Urbanscapes 2018.

In conjunction with The 50th anniversary of the ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, this concert is organised by The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur, and in cooperation with Embassy of Japan in Malaysia.
