Contemporary Dance Performance ? ?not Quite Right? by Strange Kinoko Dance Company (Japan) Justin Caleo (Australia)

POSTERDeveloped as part of the ?Australia-Japan Dance Exchange 2006?project, Not Quite Right is a highly acclaimed collaborative dance piece by Japan?s Strange Kinoko Dance Company and Australian designer Justin Caleo.

Jumping, sliding and dancing around an eclectic selection of furniture, created by set designer Justin Caleo, the dancers from Strange Kinoko use everyday objects to question the normality of everyday life.

?not quite rightwas shown as a ?work in progress? in Melbourne, and performed in 3 cities in Japan in 2006-2007. This year, they will tour to Malaysia and Australia (Sydney Opera House) with its completed version.

Workshops 
These are for artists / non-artists and dancers / non-dancers. Everyone is welcomed!

Props Design Workshop with Justin Caleo
Using common cardboard, the aim of workshop is to rapidly create and develop objects to be used in a contemporary dance set. The types of objects created will be informed through exploration of the material qualities of cardboard within the limited time frame. Bring your cutting knife and scissors, we are going to create a scene!

?Dance with Props? Workshop with Chie Ito
Using props created by participants to Justin?s workshop, Chie Ito will conduct movement workshop with dancers from Strange Kinoko Dance Company.

Try to doubt what you think is ?normal? in your daily life.
Doubt even when your sure that no doubt exists.
And try to shift a little bit to change your point of view.

Tilt the table top just a little, make chair legs different length, use furniture at incorrect scale.
See the domestic from a different perspective.

To think ?what is the correct?? is not important but to take a look at your daily life again without obsession. Then, you might see something you never seen before.
In that way, your daily life may see changes slightly pleasant.

*Chie Itoh (Choreographer)

Born in Tokyo, 1970. At the age of 4, she started modern dance. When she was 15 years old, she started classical ballet. First 10 minute choreography performed at the age of 18. To pursue choreography, she studied dance at Nihon University. In 1990, She founded Strange Kinoko Dance Company with her college classmates. She has been actively involved as a choreographer and a director for all the pieces the Kinoko performed.Beside the theater performances of Strange Kinoko Dance Company, she has contributed her work as a collaborator with various artists. Her choreography has been seen in theatre, music videos, and films. In 2000, she won the Yokohama culture Foundation Award for her choreography, “Because you said it would be exposed” (duo piece). She participated in the Philippe Decoufle premiere work “IRIS” as an assistant of Mr. Decoufle in October 2003. In 2003, she also took charge of dance for educational TV program “Do Re Mi TV” for elementary students. In 2006, her solo performance “I will dive in.” was performed in Tokyo.

*Justin Caleo (Set Designer)

He studied arts in Mexico, Vietnam and Australia, graduated from Art Design & Communication at RMIT University in Melbourne in 2000. His print works have been exhibited in numerous exhibitions and participated Design Biennale in France two consecutive years. He picks up various means, motifs and kinds of materials for his expression.
