(MOTOKI Katsuhide 本木克英/2014/119 min)
In late 18th-century Japan, clans are required to make a biennial voyage to Edo in a life-or-death show of respect to the ruling shogun. Masaatsu Naito, the leader of a small and impoverished samurai estate, had just returned from such a trip with his retainers when they are suddenly ordered back to the capital within five days, an impossible task that could see their land repossessed by a greedy councillor. Armed with only their wits and running legs, the brotherhood pulls together to traverse the land and save their beloved home.
Katsuhide Motoki breathes new life into the jidaigeki (samurai period drama) genre with his masterful injections of rollicking humour and big action set-pieces, a recipe that won him domestic box office success and the Blue Ribbon Award for best film.
