Un Yamada x Kelantanese Traditional Music Collaboration Project

Inviting Un Yamada, a choreographer and dancer who has been active both in Japan and overseas countries, The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur (JFKL) together with National Academy of Arts Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) will organize “Un Yamada x Kelantanese Traditional Music Collaboration Project” from 16 to 28 October 2019 in Kuala Lumpur.

Since her first visit to Malaysia in 2012, Yamada has been contributing the cultural exchange between Malaysia and Japan through dance by conducting workshops for students, creating new pieces with local dancers and also inviting them to perform in Japan.

This project is aiming to create a new dance-music piece with the theme of “Blessings for Life”, together with the specialists in Kelantanese traditional performing arts; Zamzuriah Zahari, as a project coordinator, Kamarul Baisah Hussin and Mat Din Hussin as multi-instrumentalists. During this project, they will be visiting Kelantan, a state with an abundance of tradition in the performing arts scene, to explore especially the places and community related to Main Puteri, a combination of dance and music as a healing method. On 26 and 27 October, JFKL will be presenting showcases and talks by the project participants to share the results and the process of this collaborative project.
