DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css=".vc_custom_1655887265152{margin-bottom: 50px !important;}"][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]This Summer Institute aims to provide opportunities for young researchers and graduate students to improve their research methods and abilities and build a trilateral network of researchers between the U.S.\, Southeast Asia\, and Japan.\nGENERAL INFORMATION\n\n\n\nDate\nSaturday\, July 21\, 2018 Wednesday\, July 25\, 2018\n\n\nLocations\nTokyo and Hayama-machi in Kanagawa Prefecture\n( Shonan Village Center )\n\n\nSchedule\nPlease refer to a sample schedule\n*Please be aware the actual schedule may differ from this sample schedule.\n\n\nMain Contents\n\n\nPresentation/discussion among participants in multi-national and multi-disciplinary groups\, as well as comments by lecturers\nLectures/workshops provided by lecturers\nNote: The Summer Institute will be conducted in English in principle.\n\n\n\n\nLecturers\nAcademics from the U.S.\, Southeast Asia\, and Japan in humanities and social sciences\n\n\nParticipants\nApproximately 24 researchers from the U.S.\, Southeast Asia\, and Japan.\n\n\nOptional Tour\nThose interested will be able to participate in an optional tour.\n\n(1)Dates: Wednesday\, July 25 to Friday\, July 27\n(2)Location: To be determined. (Previous destinations include Kyoto\, Fukushima and Miyagi).\n\n\n\n\n\n \nAPPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS\n\n\n\nEligibility\nApplicants must meet all of the following criteria:\n\nApplicants must be graduate students or relatively junior scholars affiliated with institutions of higher education or research institutions in the U.S.\, 10 ASEAN countries\, or Japan; Postdoctoral researchers are also eligible to apply.\nGraduate students or scholars who are conducting research related to Japan in the humanities or social sciences.\nApplicants must be able to attend lectures and discussions in English; preferences are made to those who understand Japanese as well.\nApplicant must be able to attend the entire program except the optional tour.\nApplicant must be in good health.\n\n\n\n\nApplication Procedure\nDocuments needed\n\nApplication form\, download here\nStatement of Purpose (up to 2 pages)\nPhotograph ID (electronic file )\n\nPlease submit the following documents to the Japan Foundation by email to\nThe Japan Foundation\nAmericas Section\nJapanese Studies and Intellectual Exchange Department\nTel: +81-(0)3-5369-6069 / Fax: +81-(0)3-5369-6041\nE-mail: summer_institute@jpf.go.jp\n\n\n\nDeadline\n9:30 a.m. (Japan Standard Time) \, Monday\, May 7\, 2018\n\n\nNotes\nApplication form and attached documents must be completed in English\n\n\nResult Notification\nResults will be announced by Friday\, June 8\, 2018\n\n\n\n \nBENEFIT\nThe Japan Foundation will cover the costs detailed below during the program.\nAll other costs must be covered by the participants themselves.\nFOR ALL PARTICIPANTS\n\nTransportation\, accommodation\, and meals during the program in Tokyo and Hayama.\nTeaching materials and equipment necessary for the program.\nTransportation\, accommodation and meals during the optional tour will be covered for participants attending the tour.\n\nFOR PARTICIPANTS FROM OVERSEAS\n\nRound-trip tickets for a fixed\, direct international flight to Japan (economy class).\nTickets will be purchased by the Japan Foundation.\nInternational travel insurance.\nVisa application fee and other travel costs that the Japan Foundation considers essential and daily per diem allowance according to the number of days of travel.\n\nFOR PARTICIPANTS FROM JAPAN\n\nRound-trip transportation tickets between the railway station nearest to his/her home and Tokyo. Tickets will be purchased by the Japan Foundation.\nOther travel costs that the Japan Foundation considers essential and daily per diem allowance according to the number of days of travel.\n\nPARTICIPANTS OBLIGATION\n\nThroughout the period of the Summer Institute\, participants must stay in the designated institution\, and actively participate in the programs offered.\nParticipants must submit questionnaires within 1 week after the Summer Institute ends.\nParticipants must submit final reports within 1 month after the Summer Institute ends.\n\nOTHER NOTES\n\nParticipants may share a guest room with another/other participant(s) during the institute and/or the optional tour.
