Yet\, at the same time\, we observed a rise in new and reimagined virtual social spaces. Even in times of uncertainty\, or maybe because of the uncertainties\, we are drawn to stay connected with others; to find the familiar or even new ways to help take it in.\n\nLooking through a kaleidoscope allows us to see things only differently and presents a whole new imagery altogether. In other words\, it can also bring in ever-changing and endless possibilities\, so as long as you shake it up and hold it to the light.\n\n2022 will mark the 65th year of the diplomatic relationship between Malaysia and Japan and the 40th year of the Look East Policy since it was implemented in 1982. How has our relationship changed or developed over the years? What took place\, and what is still in the works? And as we move forward\, what does our future hold?\n\nReflecting your personal encounters\, memories\, thoughts or hopes on Japan\, or through a wider lens when it comes to the connection and relationship between the two countries\, we hope to create a kaleidoscope with artworks of all forms in this exhibition and hope to keep being connected while we still cannot physically travel to each other freely.\n\n  JURY PANEL  \n\n\n\n \tBeverly Yong & Rachel Ng (Rogue Art)\n \tJune Tan (Producer\, Five Arts Centre)\n \tNg Chor Guan (Co-founder\, Toccata Studio)\n \tNur Hanim Khairuddin (General Manager\, PORT Ipoh)\n\n  APPLICATION DEADLINE  \n[EXTENDED] 9 January 2022\n\n  SCHEDULE  \n\n\n\n9 January 2022\nApplication deadline\n\n\n28 January 2022\nAnnouncement of Selected Proposals\n\n\n1 February to\n28 February 2022\nProduction period\n\n\n28 March 2022\nLaunch of Website - Kaleidoscope Japan opens\n\n\n\n  ELIGIBILITY  \n\n \tOpen to all artists and creatives based in Malaysia\n \tOpen to individual artists\, creators\, and art collectives/groups (registered or unregistered)\, referred to in the application process as "Artists"\n \tArtworks include art in all forms such as visual arts\, moving/static images\, films\, music\, performing arts\, literature and architecture.\n\n  APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS  \nPlease submit the Application Form in full with required documents as stated in the Application Guideline to the Japan Foundation\, Kuala Lumpur via e-mail  to thejapanfoundationkl[at]gmail[dot]com by 9 January 2021\, Sunday.\n\nApplications can be submitted in Bahasa Malaysia or English. Applicants can submit only one proposal each.\n\nKindly download the following attachments:\n\n \tApplication Guideline (PDF) [UPDATED AS OF 23 DECEMBER 2021]\n \tApplication Form (Word)\n\n  CONTACT AND INQUIRIES  \nKaleidoscope Japan\nThe Japan Foundation\, Kuala Lumpur\nCultural Affairs Department\n18th Floor\, Northpoint Block B\, Mid-Valley City\,\nNo. 1\, Medan Syed Putra\, 59200 Kuala Lumpur.\nTel: 03 – 2284 6228\nFAX: 03 – 2287 5859\nEmail: thejapanfoundationkl[at]gmail[dot]com\n\n\n\nPage last updated: 11 April 2022\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Photographic Images and Matter: Japanese Prints of the 1970s
DESCRIPTION:[vc_section][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]Take a glimpse into art forms that transformed the global art scene and explore the world of 1970’s Japanese prints at "Photographic Images and Matter: Japanese Prints of the 1970s".\n\nThe exhibition features on print expressions from the 1970s as seen in the work of 14 artists who helped develop a print movement in the world of Japanese contemporary art in the 1970’s. During the golden age of art in Japan\, there was a strong focus on materials such as print blocks\, paper and ink\, used to create artworks that were one-of-a kind. These subjective expressions\, based on photographic images and matter\, greatly expanded the print medium while also helping to shape trends in contemporary art as a whole.\n\nThis exhibition will be touring Kuala Lumpur\, Penang and Sabah at the following dates:\n\n\n\n  [ENDED]  \n17 January to 27 February 2022\nLevel 5\, GMBB\, Kuala Lumpur\n\n\n  [ENDED]  \n10 March to 8 April 2022\nMuzium & Galeri Tuanku Fauziah\, USM\, Penang\n\n\n  [HAPPENING NOW]  \n19 April to 18 May 2022\nSabah Art Gallery\, Sabah\nOpen Tuesday - Sunday\, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM\n[Closed on Monday\, Labour Day & Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Day 1 & Day 2)]\nMuseum admission fee applies. Click here for details.\n\n\n\nStay tuned as we will be sharing more about this exhibition soon!\n\nThis exhibition is organised by The Japan Foundation\, Kuala Lumpur and Embassy of Japan in Malaysia\, with support from GMBB\, Kuala Lumpur\, Muzium & Galeri Tuanku Fauziah\, Universiti Sains Malaysia\, Penang & Sabah Art Gallery.\n\n \n\n\n\n  ABOUT THIS EXHIBITION  \n\nThis exhibition focuses on print expressions from the 1970s as seen in the work of 14 artists who helped develop a print movement in the world of Japanese contemporary art. The exhibition is divided into two sections: “The Age of Photographic Images\,” which focuses on the use of photographic images in the print medium\, and “Images of Autonomous Matter\,” which focuses on works that were shaped by the intentions of matter.\n\nWhile on the one hand the period is notable as the golden age of works in which photographic images were converted into prints\, the 1970s also saw the rise of a new print movement in which a strong emphasis was placed on allowing materials (matter) used in print-making\, such as print blocks\, paper\, and ink\, to speak for themselves. These subjective expressions\, based on photographic images and matter\, greatly expanded the print medium while also helping to shape trends in contemporary art as a whole.\n\nIn 1957\, the Japanese government launched the International Biennial Exhibition of Prints in Tokyo as a special feature of its postwar culture policy. Awarded the International Grand Prize in the sixth edition of the biennale in 1968\, Tetsuya Noda transformed photographic portraits of his family into prints. His works were significant in that they exemplified the huge changes that were underway in prints internationally\, confirmed that there were parallels between trends in contemporary prints and contemporary art\, and suggested future developments in contemporary art.\n\nIn the 1970s\, there was a rapid increase in Japanese works that adopted Noda’s method of converting photographs into prints\, leading to a golden age in the medium. The era also saw the rise of works that placed special importance on allowing the materials (matter) used in printmaking (print blocks\, paper\, ink\, etc.) to speak for themselves\, which was lauded as a new trend in the medium. Another significant trend was the emergence of prints with an extremely strong materiality in which the image was transformed into a material.\n\nThese autonomous expressions of photographic images and matter in the 1970s dramatically expanded the field of prints and also exerted a strong influence on trends in contemporary art. While introducing important trends in prints during the 1970s\, this exhibition focuses on print-inspired trend in contemporary art of the same period. The exhibition is divided into two sections: “The Age of Photographic Images\,” which focuses on the use of photographic images in the print medium\, and “Images of Autonomous Matter\,” which focuses on works that were shaped by the intentions of matter.\n\nSection 1: An Age of Photographic Expression\nWith the increase in photographs and printing\, and the proliferation of the powerful medium of television\, which accompanied the expansion of production and consumption in the 1960s and ‘70s\, Japanese society came to be overrun with images. During this period\, new techniques such as silkscreening and offset printing\, which made it easy to transform photographic images\, quickly took hold. Under these circumstances\, numerous works emerged in which photographic images were converted into prints through the use of photoengraving\, leading to a new mainstream in printmaking. In many of these works\, all traces of handiwork were eliminated in order to suppress emotional content and encode the image. Exhibiting artists (in order of work): Tetsuya Noda\, Kosuke Kimura\, Akira Matsumoto\, Satoru Saito\, Hideki Kimura\, and Sakumi Hagiwara.\n\nSection 2: Images of Autonomous Matter\nBetween about 1968 and the early 1970s\, a new trend emerged in art in which simple substances as stone\, wood\, paper\, cotton\, and steel sheets were presented as works\, sometimes alone and sometimes in combination with each other. As an extension of this movement\, print works\, which limited human involvement and manipulation of the image to a bare minimum\, and set out to allow materials (matter) such as print blocks\, paper\, and ink to speak for themselves\, received attention for expanding the concept of the print and giving rise to a new trend in the medium. This period also saw the materialization of images\, a conscious movement that had begun in the 1950s\, and an approach to production that centered on expressing something spiritual through matter\, which resulted in works with a strong material quality.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text]\nPage last updated: 22 April 2022\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][/vc_section]

SUMMARY:All the Time I Pray to Buddha\, I Keep on Killing Mosquitoes
DESCRIPTION:[vc_section][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]\n\n\nAll the Time I Pray To Buddha\, I Keep on Killing Mosquitoes (ATIPB) is a video installation exhibition and 4 dialogue sessions by Malaysian multi-disciplinary artist Gan Siong King. The exhibition is organized by Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur (JFKL)\, with support from Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre (PJPAC)\, and will run from 19 to 23 January 2022 at PJPAC.\n\nATIPB features 2 video essays — The Koganecho Gesture (TKG) and CITIZEN — and 4 dialogue sessions to further discuss ideas and issues brought up in the video essays.\n\n\n\n\n\nNOTICE\nThe bookings for the viewing and dialogue sessions are separate.\nKindly scroll to the end of the page for details.\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="20657" img_size="full" alignment="center"][vc_column_text]\n\nThe title All the Time I Pray To Buddha\, I Keep on Killing Mosquitoes is borrowed from a haiku by the Japanese poet Issa Kobayashi\, as translated by American poet Robert Hass. It is used in TKG to represent humanity’s persistent reach for an ideal while dealing with the realities of life — a contradiction that mirrors the conditions most contemporary artists work in.\n\nTKG is a single-channel video installation that was first exhibited at *The Koganecho Bazaar 2020 Vol.2 (KB2020) in Yokohama\, Japan\, and was made for Gan’s online KB2020 artist residency.\n\nTKG is a meandering video essay that seeks to engage the audience in conversations on contemporary art and art-making. It is based on recollections of conversations with various people Gan has met over the last two decades of his creative practice\, and ranges from common (mis)assumptions about art to actual insights into how a contemporary artist navigates through the challenges of making an artwork for an international art festival in Japan. TKG is made with found online audio and video\, and documents the strangeness of reflecting in isolation\, about artists and communities\, in the midst of a pandemic.\n\nCITIZEN is the result of an open call for collaboration via TKG. It is based on a script by Makarim Salman\, a British physicist turned financial analyst who then became a tour guide and resident of Tokyo. CITIZEN is a love story about Tokyo from the point of view of a global citizen.\n\nFrom 20 to 23 January\, there will be an in-person dialogue session between the artist and selected guest speakers and moderators from different creative backgrounds. Each session will have different areas of focus\, with the intention of providing the audience a multi-angle way of looking at art-making and art. These sessions will be made available to stream via FB Live on The Japan Foundation\, Kuala Lumpur Facebook's page.\n\n* SOPs will be observed throughout the exhibition period. Kindly scroll to the end of this page for details.\n* Audience will be required to preregister for their viewing slot below. \n\n* The Koganecho Bazaar (TKB) is both an artist residency and an annual art festival started in 2004. It is situated in a former red-light district in Yokohama\, Japan. KB2020’s theme is Community & Artists.  https://www.koganecho.net/info/english.html\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][/vc_section][vc_section full_width="stretch_row" css=".vc_custom_1655261477374{padding-bottom: 50px !important;background-color: #e1e1e1 !important;}"][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]  DIALOGUES  \nEach dialogue session will be held in-person at PJPAC. Audience is required to preregister for your slots to join the session. The project will also feature stories and reports which illustrate diversity and vigor of reading culture in each country that richly reflects the present state of its society and culture.\n\nThe 4 writers from Malaysia joining this project are Nadia Khan\, Terence Toh\, Li Zi Shu and M. Saffie Abdul Rahim\nProgram Sejarah\, Universiti Malaysia Sabah\n(Lecture will be conducted in Malay)\n\nPENGLIBATAN PEMODAL JEPUN DALAM SEKTOR PERIKANAN DI BORNEO UTARA\, 1920AN HINGGA PASCA PERANG DUNIA KEDUA\nPemerintahan Maharaja Meiji (1867-1912) mewarisi keadaan sosioekonomi dan politik tidak stabil dari pemerintahan kesyogunan Tokugawa. Penyelidikan in bertujuan menganalisis kegiatan ekonomi berasaskan perikanan masyarakat Jepun dan impaknya kepada perkembangan ekonomi Borneo Utara sekitar 1920-an hingga Pasca Perang Dunia Kedua.

In the Momoyama period (1568-1615)\, yakishime became treasured tea wares. Today\, artists produce yakishime objets d’art as well as utilitarian vessel forms; yakishime has become an established style of ceramics in Japan. Yakishime wares are produced in a variety of forms and include some works with natural glazes due to ash falling on them during firing. Their long history continues today\, with yakishime a familiar part of everyday life.\n\n\n\n  ON THE JAPAN FOUNDATION TRAVELING EXHIBITIONS  \nThe Japan Foundation’s traveling exhibitions cover a wide range\, from those introducing traditional Japanese arts such as ceramic art\, crafts\, and Japanese dolls to those showcasing Japan today through contemporary art\, photography\, architecture\, and design. Approximately twenty permanent traveling exhibitions are on the road throughout the year\, appearing in over 100 art galleries\, museums\, and cultural facilities.\n\n\n\nPage last updated: 8 December 2022

SUMMARY:MAJAS Public Lecture Series (December 2022)
DESCRIPTION:MAJAS Public Lecture Series (December 2022)\n\nDate: 22 December 2022 (Thursday)\nTime: 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM\nPlatform: Online via Zoom (get link here)\nAdmission: FREE\n\nSpeaker: Professor Dr. Mikihiro Moriyama (Nanzan University\, Japan)\n(Lecture will be conducted in Bahasa Melayu)\n\n\n\nTOPIK:\nSEJARAH PERKEMBANGAN PEMBELAJARAN BAHASA MELAYU DI JEPUN\n\nABSTRAK:\n\n\nOrang Jepun mula mempelajari Bahasa Melayu pada akhir abad ke-19. To celebrate this occasion\, the Japan Foundation\, Kuala Lumpur presents this special collaborative effort where we will invite Japanese guitarist/singer/songwriter Erino Yumiki to Malaysia to perform a live concert in collaboration with Nadir\, a Malaysian band composed of musicians from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities.\n\n\n\nBetter known to support with her guitar to many known artists in Japan such as KIRINJI\, Motohiro Hata\, Asako Toki and Kou Shibasaki\, YUMIKI’s funky groove and guitar technique won the hearts of these artists and upcoming ones she is collaborating with. Seeing her having fun on stage will also captivate you to do the same. Now continuing to establish her sense of style and identity\, this talented singer-songwriter\, eventually found herself in Malaysia to pursue her music education and taking a break from her career.\n\nComplementing her fun and bright style\, Nadir\, a progressive-ethno-fusion band that tastefully blends sounds that represent their different worldly experiences\, culture\, and the spirit of collaboration into what is uniquely Malaysian music with limitless sonic & cultural boundaries. With Carnatic vocals duel with rock riffs\, sitar melodies permeate through explosive percussion and table cadences\, and tin whistles sing with saxophone melodies\, the outcome is not what you would expect.\n\nComplementing and highlighting both Erino Yumiki’s fun and bright style\, together with Nadir’s colourful rhythms\, the audience can be sure to join and groove along.\n\n VENUE \nThe Bee @ Publika\nLot 36B\, Level G2\, Block C\, Publika\, Jalan Dutamas 1\, Solaris Dutamas 50480 Kuala Lumpur\nDoors open at 7PM\n\n SHOWTIMES \n8:00PM\, 10 March 2023 (Friday)\n8:00PM\, 11 March 2023 (Saturday)\n\nADMISSION\nAdmission Ticket: RM 40.\nConcession: 50% OFF for JFKL Members\, Students\, Seniors above 60 & Disabled.\nhttps://thebee.ubertickets.asia/\n*This is a standing event. \n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_section full_width="stretch_row" css=".vc_custom_1655772749931{padding-bottom: 50px !important;background-color: #e1e1e1 !important;}"][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Artist Profiles [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=".vc_custom_1655772824245{margin-bottom: 30px !important;}"][vc_column width="2/5"][vc_single_image source="external_link" custom_src="https://www.jfkl.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Erino-Yumiki.png"][/vc_column][vc_column width="3/5"][vc_column_text]ERINO Yumiki\n\nErino Yumiki\, a guitarist/singer-songwriter\, was born on August 8\, 1990\, in Osaka. DESCRIPTION:MAJAS Member Lecture Series (March 2023)\n\nDate: 22 March 2023 (Wednesday)\nTime: 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM\nVenue: Auditorium\, Department of East Asian Studies\, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences\, UM\nAdmission: FREE\n\nSpeaker: Dr. Normalis Amzah (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia)\n(Lecture will be conducted in English)\n\n\n\nTOPIC:\nA Sociocultural Perspective towards Forming a Japanese Hydrogen Society Frontier: The Case of Toyota\n\n\nABSTRACT:\n\n\nOver the last 20 years\, Toyota has successfully maintained its eco-brand image in the Japanese market as shown in the Nikkei BP ESG (Environmental Social Governance) Brand Survey conducted by Nikkei Business Publication. The Nikkei BP ESG Brand Survey mainly focuses on consumer perceptions regarding company image.\n\nTherefore\, the survey suggests that Toyota has been striving to not only implement environmental production and system management but has also been working very hard towards communicating such efforts to the public. This talk explores how Toyota represents its hybrid or ecological cars in a\nseries of environmental campaigns in Japan for the last 25 years. The objective of the study is to layout an environmental car campaign development that eventually leads to the introduction of hydrogen society concept. The campaigns consist of printed advertisements\, television commercials\, and brochures from 1990s to 2020s.\n\nThe themes of the content analysis consist of communication objectives\, process cycles\, benefits\, identification\, credentials\, scientific figures\, and endorsements. These themes were developed based on the triangulations of corporate\, marketing and environmental communication approach. It can be concluded that Toyota may have successfully showcased themselves as an eco-friendly manufacturer and it do not only adhere to the current or established notion of environmentally friendly car\, but the campaigns demonstrate how Toyota is leading the public to its own definition and perspective of ecofriendliness.\n\nIn other words\, Toyota is demonstrating an inclination to lead the environmental platform and exerting effort to redefine the low carbon society as a hydrogen society. The hydrogen society notion not only exudes ecological concern but demonstrates the country’s energy security inclination as well.\n\n\n\n\nDownload e-Flyer\n\n\n\n\n.
