LIBRARY USERS GUIDE

Visiting The Library

  • Everyone is welcome to visit our library, regardless of being a member or not.

  • Please sign in at the main reception of the Japan Foundation office every time you visit the Library.

  • Non-members are only allowed to refer to books and use the photocopy facility while members can borrow materials.

  • Please leave your bags and other personal belongings in a locker provided at the library entrance. You will be able to get a locker key from the library counter. Please return the key to the counter when you leave the library.

  • Make sure any valuable items are with you always as we take no responsibility in any case of loss or/and damage of your property.

  • If you visit the library with small children please keep an eye on them as adults accompanying children are solely responsible for any accidents that may occur while in the library.

Using The Library

  • The Library is a quiet place for members and non-members who require a quiet environment for studying. Please be considerate towards other users at all times. We may ask you to leave the premises if we consider you disturbing others. Inappropriate behaviour includes persistent chatting, mobile-telephone use, smoking, eating, consuming alcohol, taking illegal drugs, spitting and any other actions considered irritating. In addition small children should be under supervision of the accompanying adults.

  • If you require and beverage or sweets for a long stay, please make sure your drink is in a bottle with a cap and any rubbish is in the refuse can.

  • Please use the lobby outside the library if you require a space for talking and discussion. This also applies to mobile-telephone use.

  • A photocopy machine is available near the library counter for non-commercial purposes. We currently charge 10 sen per sheet. We do not provide photocopying services via telephone.

Borrowing Items

  • Only members are entitled to borrow items from our library. Please present your membership card when you borrow any item out of the library.

  • Each member may borrow a maximum of five (5) items. This includes books, cassettes and CD's.

  • Each book may be taken out for up to 1 week. You may extend the return date by giving us or call or emailing the library. You may extend the return date for another 1 week, but only once. Always quote your membership number when you request an extension of your return date. However, if the item is reserved by another member, we cannot give you an extension.

  • Some items, such as popular language textbooks, are in high demand and therefore no telephone/email renewal is accepted even without reservation. However, renewal in person at the counter is possible if there is no one waiting for the item.

  • A penalty will be imposed on items return after the due date. The charge is 10 sen per book per night, including closing dates of the library. Hence it is strongly recommended to renew your returning date well in advance.

  • The library also contains books for reference only. These items cannot be borrowed in principle.
