JFKL LIBRARY

THE LIBRARY COLLECTION

The JFKL library contains a total number of approximately 20,000 volumes of books and audio-visual materials. We are specialised in both Japanese-language education and non-language Japanese studies. The main languages of these materials are either in English or Japanese. Our librarians are available either in English, Malay, Chinese (Mandarin), Tamil, Malayalam, Korean or Japanese if you require assistance.

Reference We have a number of reference books such as large dictionaries and encyclopaedias. There are also those reference materials especially for children often useful for beginners learning the Japanese language.
Specialist publications Our collection concentrates on Humanities and Social Sciences including artistic subjects. Many of them can be taken out of the library if you are a member of the Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur and are useful for researchers, students, professionals and the like.
General publications We also have a wide selection of both classic and modern literature from Japan. If you do not find work of your favourite writers, you may suggest us to add them to our collection through our suggestion box at the library.
Language textbooks The most popular section of our library contains useful materials at any level of proficiency in the Japanese language. They may be accompanied with audio-visual materials for enhancing learning experiences. We provide library users with facilities to play them. Japanese-language teachers are also our regular customers.
Children’s books and comics There is a high demand on these publications, and we continue to expand the section. The children’s books cover different age groups from toddlers to pupils.
Videotape-playing booth We have short documentaries introducing Japan and its culture as well as Japanese feature films. These can be viewed at our library.
Journals Our journal collection is still small, but we aim to expand it so that we could attract more specialist users. Our current subscription includes Social Science Japan Journal (OUP), Monthly Journal of Institute of Developing Economies (JETRO), Japan and the World Economy (North-Holland), Japan Journal of Educational Technology, Japanese Linguistics, Asia Jiho (Asian Affairs Research Council, Tokyo), Intercultural Education, Japan Quarterly (Asahi Shimbun), Nihongo Journal, etc.
Magazines Available Japanese magazines include Hiragana Times [language education], Monthly Nihongo [language education], Tabi [sightseeing], Number [sports], Orange Page [cooking], Nikkei Women [female lifestyle], AERA [general journalism], Tokyo Walker [timeout in Tokyo], an-an [female fashion], Men’s Non-No [male fashion] and much more. These are very good sources for updating yourselves about Japan.
Newspapers In addition to major local and international newspapers, we subscribe to Japanese newspapers. They include Daily Yomiuri [in English], Japan Times [in English], Nikkei Shimbun [in Japanese], Asahi Shimbun [in Japanese], Mainichi Chugakusei (Jr. High School Students’) Shimbun [in Japanese], etc.

Do visit us and spend some time browsing our collection. Many materials are not available in Malaysia except at our library. We welcome both our members and non-members.
