The Cultural Affairs Department (CAD), formerly known as Japan Cultural Centre, has been active in Humanities and Social Sciences, and we continue to do so. We are interested in cultural and intellectual activities that promote better bilateral understanding between Malaysia and Japan. Our support is also available for internationally collaborative projects that contribute to better multilateral understanding and solving shared problems among Asian countries.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
The centre is a gateway for Malaysian applicants to the Japan Foundation’s grant programmes. The details of the programmes can be found at the website of the foundation’s headquarters (www.jpf.go.jp).A summary of programmes below provides you with an idea of our working areas.
1. Fellowship by Invitation to Japan - This programme provides outstanding Malaysian scholars, researchers, artists and the like with opportunities to pursue their specialist fields in Japan. (Contact: Anuar Hamzah or Seiya Shimada)
2. Performing Art Exchange - This programme provides financial support for the exchange of performance arts between Malaysia and Japan. (Contact: Seiya Shimada)
3. Exhibition of Japanese Arts - Financial support is available for institutions planning exhibitions introducing Japanese arts in Malaysia.
4. Publication Exchange - Publishers with following projects may apply for this programme: translated Japanese work of noteworthiness and original Japan-related work in Humanities and Social Sciences.
5. Audio-Visual Exchange - This programme gives financial support for the production of Japan-related audio-visual materials as well as the introduction of Japanese materials in Malaysia.
6. Asia Centre Grant - The foundation’s Asia Centre in Tokyo promotes intellectual exchange in the Asian region and tries to solve problems shared by the countries. It financially supports internationally collaborative projects mainly in Humanities and Social Sciences. (Contact: Nik Hasnin or Seiya Shimada)
7. Promotion of Japanese Studies – The foundation promotes studies about Japan through several programmes, such as visiting professorship, research grant, conference support and book donation.
In the same areas of our headquarters as above, the CAD in Kuala Lumpur has its own financial resource although it’s small in scale. We accept applications at any time of the year for the small grant (usually not more than RM5,000 per project). Please contact relevant personnel above for an appointment. Your enquiries are most welcome. Any questions should be directed to jpcc@jfkl.org.my for further assistance.
ORGANISING EVENT
The CAD also organises and/or support events in Malaysia usually in collaboration with Malaysian organisations. Some events are regular and have already been well known among a small community, such as Japanese-film screening and tea ceremony, while the others are small, e.g., school exhibition. Please email to jpcc@jfkl.org.my for further details.
